How Trauma Therapy Works
A Trauma-Informed Protocol for Healing and Self-Discovery
After working with a variety of professionals, it appears to me healing trauma involves connecting with your authentic Self and addressing the root causes of pain. Here’s a structured protocol that ties in a variety of experiential theoretical models (IFS, EMDR, SE, and TF-CBT) as a guide for this process:
1. Create a Safe Refuge (Heart-Centered Place):
Begin by inviting the client’s Self (or your own Self in meditation) to visualize or sense a safe, peaceful inner space – a “refuge.”
Ask: “If you could imagine a place where you feel completely safe, what would it look like?”
If the client’s Self struggles, explore blocks: “What’s making it hard to feel safe? What needs to happen next to create safety?” This step fosters calm, connection, and clarity as a foundation for deeper work.
2. Explore the Root Wound:
Guide the client’s Self to gently identify a memory, emotion, or physical sensation connected to their current pain.
For example: “Where in your body do you feel this emotion? Does it bring up any specific memories?” Many wounds stem from childhood or significant life events. Encourage curiosity: “Is this the memory we need to work with, or does something else come to mind?”
3. Release Pain and Address Unhelpful Beliefs:
Help clients name emotions like shame or fear and identify the beliefs tied to them (e.g., “I’m not enough” or “People always leave me”). Ask: “What have you told yourself because of this? What decisions or promises did you make to cope?” Work toward reframing: “What would it feel like to let this belief go?” Encourage forgiveness of self and others where appropriate.
4. Reclaim Freedom:
Support the client in releasing burdens. Ask: “What would freedom from this look like? How would you feel if this no longer held you back?”. Anchor the session by helping them integrate this experience, affirming their resilience and strength.
This approach fosters growth and reconnection with the authentic Self and wounded parts, through safe, client-centered exploration.
