How Trauma Affects The Brain

 How Trauma Affects the Brain
Trauma doesn’t just leave emotional scars—it also impacts the way our brain functions. Understanding these effects is a crucial step in healing.

Prefrontal Cortex:
This area helps with decision-making, focus, and managing emotions. Trauma can disrupt its function, making it harder to think clearly or regulate stress.

 Hippocampus:
Responsible for processing memories, the hippocampus may shrink after trauma. This can lead to fragmented memories and difficulty distinguishing the past from the present.

 Amygdala:
The brain’s “alarm system” becomes overactive, leading to heightened fear responses and challenges in calming down.
As a CBT therapist, I’ve seen how understanding these changes can empower individuals on their healing journeys. Therapy techniques, such as grounding exercises and cognitive restructuring, can help calm the amygdala, strengthen the prefrontal cortex, and process memories in a safe way.
