Unrequited Love

Nothing spoils the taste of peanut butter like unrequited love. ~Charle Brown
“Guess what?” I looked at Sarah, my best friend since 2nd grade. We’ve been through this routine before, and both of us know what’s coming. “What?” I asked. I really don’t like guessing. We’re walking home after school, I’m freezing. “Guess,” she prompts me. I study her facr and then think. What could make her this happy? “You go another A on a test?” “Nope.” “YOur sister dropped dead?” I suggest. “I wish,” she replied giggling. This went back and forth for a while until she finally blurted out-“George kissed me.” My jaw dropped and I asked, “Lips or cheek?” She told me everything. I stopped and asked if he was coming with us to the movie Saturday night. Last time he came with us I sat next to him. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. OK, maybe heaven is a bit much, but I was very, very, happy. As we turn onto my street and start to part ways I look down at the snow. It was all white and beautiful. It reminds me of cream chees. Not like the snow in the school yard. That snow is all gray and dirty. This was nice, nice like how he thinks of me. The chances of George ever liking me are about as good as me passing math. I knew that! Giggling, I thought maybe I’ll get a few poems out of this unrequited love thing. Ya think?
