How Writing Relieves Stress on Your Brain
How can you deal with stress?
Ever tried “Stream of consciousness writing?”
It’s a unique type of journaling.
It can help you reduce stress.
It’s like having a conversation with yourself.
Let’s see how you can try it when you’re feeling stressed.
1. First of all, decide how long you wanna write for.
For example, 10 minutes.
But even 5 minutes is okay.
2. Now, pick a place where you can focus without distractions.
For example:
→ In nature
→ At a cozy café
→ In your living room
→ In a peaceful corner of your coworking space
3. Now, put pen to paper and let your thoughts flow.
Write down whatever comes to mind.
Even if it seems random or silly.
Here’s the important thing:
→ Don’t worry about spelling, grammar, or making sense.
Just keep writing.
Like I’m doing right now with this LinkedIn post.
As you see, my writing is not “writing”.
It’s a conversation.
I’m a terrible writer.
I have no idea how to write.
I’m just having a conversation with you.
You know what I mean?
Oh, one thing:
→ If you don’t know what to say next, well, keep writing.
If you get stuck, just write whatever comes to mind, like:
→ “Um, I don’t know what to write”
→ “Um, gosh, my mind is blank”
→ “Ugh, why is it so hard writing?”
Just keep writing.
4. Alright! 10 minutes have passed.
Congratulation! You’re a “writer” — like me.
Now it’s time to reflect — just for a couple of minutes.
Ask yourself:
→ “Do I see any patterns or insights emerging in my writing?”
Sometimes, we can learn something new by reading our writing.
Okay, now your question is:
→ “Why do you think this exercise will work?”
Well, this type of journaling is unique for 5 reasons:
1. It’s a form of stress relief
2. It’s a way to understand yourself better
3. It’s a calming activity, almost like meditation
4. It’s like having a conversation with your mind
5. It’s a way to let out thoughts and feelings without holding back
For being free, I think we should give it a try, right?
