Anxiety Vs Calmness
How to calm anxiety?
Did you like watching cartoons?
I did — especially Disney.
So, let’s try this technique to silence anxiety:
→ Funny Voice Technique
It’s part of the Thought Diffusion techniques
Let’s see how you can give it a shot.
1. So, when you feel anxious, start noticing your thoughts.
Ask yourself:
→ What is the thought that’s making me feel this way?
For example:
→ “I’m never gonna finish this project on time”
2. Now, stick with me!
Think of a funny or ridiculous voice you can use.
For example:
→ A cartoon character
→ A high-pitched, squeaky voice
→ Or even a deep voice
3. Now it’s time to use the voice.
How?
By saying your anxious thought out loud in the funny voice you’ve chosen.
For example, let’s say you’ve chosen the voice of Timon and Pumbaa.
You know, the funny meerkat and warthog from The Lion King.
Well, your anxious thought will have their voice.
This will help reduce its impact.
4. Well, you just need to repeat it again in the funny voice.
Keep doing this until the thought starts to lose its power.
Just continue until it feels less threatening.
“Um, and if the voice isn’t working?”
Well, just try a different one.
Now, I know it seems silly, but here’s why it’s gonna work:
→ It’s hard to take the thought seriously
→ It disrupts the cycle of anxious thinking
→ It creates a psychological distance from the thought
→ It helps you see your thought as just a thought, not a fact
→ It reduces the intensity of the feeling through humor
Sometimes, humor is a superpower.
Isn’t it?
