How Do You Feel About Getting Tough Feedback
I was really bad at receiving feedback.
When I was an athlete, I used to get feedback on a weekly basis.
But I made all the possible mistakes imaginable.
⌙ I couldn’t be open.
⌙ I couldn’t listen actively.
⌙ I couldn’t use clarifying questions.
⌙ I couldn’t avoid judgment.
⌙ I couldn’t express my perspective.
⌙ I couldn’t reflect on the lesson.
⌙ And most importantly, I couldn’t separate the feedback from my personal identity.
For me, receiving feedback was like being a target for criticism.
One day, someone told me,
“Do you realize that the person you are is the product of past feedback?”
From that day on, every time I receive feedback I immediately think:
“Thanks for the gift! How much will I be able to grow thanks to this gift?”
A simple shift of perspective. *
