Don’t Measure Your Success With Someone Else’s Ruler

When I was 13, I found myself at a crossroads.
“Should I continue with my go-to sports?”

At that time, I was pretty good.

Everyone told me:
→   “You should continue.
→   “The only way to have a meaningful career in sports is to go with your go-to sport”

Up to that time, I had:
–  8 years of experience. And yes, I was really good.

In addition:
–  In the USA, a normal cross-country skier could make maybe $40,000 per year.
–  A normal football player can easily make $1,000,000 per year.
And:
–  In the USA, a cross-country skier is seen as a normal person.
–  A football player is seen as a star.

So there was no reason why I had to pick my second choice, right?
Less in terms of results, less money in the future, less fame.

But I chose my second choice.
Why?
Because I was more passionate about it.

With hindsight, I’d probably have had a more meaningful career in my first, but honestly, I don’t care!

I decided to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that.

So, if you have the courage to chart your own path, don’t measure your success with someone else’s ruler.

So, next year, choose YOUR ruler. *
