Mindfulness of Breath Meditation

As I meditate, I do find that my inner voice becomes quieter more like a whisper and can be entirely silent for ten or twenty seconds at a time. This is longer than you might think, and it’s very peaceful. I’ll discuss later on how this happens, but for now the important thing to remember is that you don’t have to push your thoughts away. Just by meditating, they are quieted naturally. Of course, sometimes a person just can’t settle down, and the thoughts don’t cease. but if you’ve changed your attitude toward these thoughts, and can look on them with kindness, you’re making progress. With practice, the inner chatter is likely to become less insistent. When your mind does quiet, words are not within easy reach. Without language, it’s hard to think about the past or the future. You are anchored in the present moment. And if you can’t think about the future, it’s hard to worry about the future. Sometimes mental images pop up that take you out of the present moment. But if your inner voice is quiet, you’re less inclined to apply judgments to them. They arise and disappear, but they don’t stimulate a further train of thought. People often report a heightened awareness of sights and sounds when they emerge from meditation, I do. It probably won’t happen the first time you meditate but may well occur if you meditate once a week for twenty minutes over, say, four weeks.
