The Light Is On
When’s the last time you went to confession? We’re launching into the big stuff. Talk abut resistance. If there is one battle that resistance has dominated is the hearts and minds of Catholics for the past 50 years. It surrounds confession. We just stopped going. On one level it makes complete sense. When you stop striving for excellence, you stop yearning for coaching. Mediocrity seeks comfort and going to confession isn’t comfortable. It’s uncomfortable to look at ourselves, assess our selfishness and sinfulness, and tell another human being about it. Wow, it’s good for us! We all have a great need for healing. We all need to be liberated from our self-centeredness. We need to grow in awareness of how what we do and say affects the people around us and people on the other side of the world. Yet, we resist it. We resist God. We resist his forgiveness. We resist happiness. Consider this analogy. How often do you wash your car, or have it washed? Perhaps once every two or three weeks, maybe once a month. When your car is all shiny and clean on the outside and clean and tidy on the inside, you feel pretty good about it. Driving a clean car feels different than driving a dirty car. When leaving the car wash with your clean car, what do you pray? You pray it doesn’t rain, right? Or at least think it, hope it! When you wash your car you’re sensitive to the things that make it dirty. In the same way, after you have been to Confession you are sensitive to the things that stop you from being the best version of yourself. When you come out of Confession you’re sensitive to the thoughts, words, actions, people, and places that will not help you to walk with God. The root of all my problems is selfishness. Be gentle with yourself, be gentle with others, and never stop striving to be all that God created you to be: the very best version of yourself. We all have a great need for forgiveness and healing. No matter how long it has been, go to Confession this week.
